Course Description: 

The Graduate Diploma in Pastoral Care is a specialised Graduate Diploma in Theology. It gives graduates with a theology degree the opportunity to specialise in Pastoral Care, through both coursework and clinically based units. Students may also include a research project.

Entry Requirements: 

The Graduate Diploma in Pastoral Care is open to candidates with an undergraduate degree or graduate diploma in theology, who have completed a basic level 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education.

Course Pathways: 

The Graduate Diploma can articulate to the Master of Arts (coursework). Candidates who include a 12,000 word Research Essay graded at Distinction standard or higher may be eligible for admission to a research degree.

Graduate Outcomes: 

A graduate who holds a graduate diploma award of the MCD in a specialist discipline is able to:

  • provide appropriate evidence of the acquisition and critical application of knowledge in the specialist theological discipline concerned, extending knowledge and skills already gained in undergraduate theological study and/or relevant prior work and/or learning;
  • either
    demonstrate the integration of knowledge and the application of skills in the specialist theological discipline concerned at a level of competence which would enable the graduate to be recognised by peers as a professional colleague;
    or
    demonstrate the potential to plan and execute a piece of research in the specialist discipline of theology concerned, which may also integrate knowledge or skills acquired in another discipline or relevant prior academic work and/or learning.
Course Volume: 

The Graduate Diploma must be completed in not less than one year and not more than three years.

Modes of Study: 

Students may take a mixture of online and face-to-face units in the discipline of Pastoral Theology and Ministry Studies.

Course Structure: 

Students must complete 90 points of study (six standard units) including a second Level 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (worth 30 points) and at least 30 points of further units in the discipline of Pastoral Theology and Ministry Studies. Students may include a 12000 word Research Essay.
