Theology of Jürgen Moltmann

Unit Code:
CT476
RTI:
United Faculty of Theology
Unit Value:
15 points

This unit is a study in depth of the theology of Jürgen Moltmann, as set out in his major writings. Significant sections will be read from the first trilogy of his works (Theology of Hope, The Crucified God and The Church in the Power of the Spirit). The more systematic exposition of his thought will also be examined, under traditional headings, with particular reference to his later works, notably The Trinity and the Kingdom of God, God in Creation, The Way of Jesus Christ, and The Spirit of Life and the Coming of God. This selection of material will be supplemented by reading sections from some of Moltmann’s shorter writings.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate a knowledge of the main parts of Moltmann’s corpus of works and its place in the theology of the 20th century;
  2. articulate a detailed and critical understanding of an area of doctrine in which Moltmann has made a significant contribution;
  3. analyse characteristic features of Moltmann’s theological method;
  4. demonstrate a capacity to use the most important secondary literature available in English.
  5. demonstrate a capacity to conduct a tutorial on a selected chapter of Moltmann’s theology and to reflect critically on issues raised.
  6. develop a specific topic of research in a critically rigorous, sustained and self-directed manner.
